Island Vibe 'Marine Love' Creative Competition Winners

12 APRIL 2014

Thanks everyone who submitted your awesome art and poetry to the competition. Congratulations to Danielle Singleton for your winning entry and big ups also for being a part of the Sea Shepard crew and helping to protect our oceans and our marine life.

Here is part of Danielle’s entry, a poem penned aboard a Sea Shepard vessel in the Antarctic waters to our south…

Broken Majestic

Open your eyes, what can you see?
Is it clear to you as it is to me?
The poisonous touch of humankind
That seems to make the world go blind

A bloodstained smear
On what once was perfection
Ignored by governments
For the sake of election

When the other cheek is turned
Much more than darkness is missed
The love returned by the mother
Like lips against a forehead kissed

To take in the bad, the ugly, the raw
To feel what it means, when it cuts to the core
Only then we’ll receive this life as a whole
The beauty that touches deep in our soul

Are your eyes wide open?
Looking beyond the daily grime
Feel through pain and devastation
What lies beyond is simply sublime
By Danielle Singleton

Special mention also to our two very talented runners up – Andrea Pigdon – whom joined the blockade at James Price Point near Broome in WA and sent us a great photo of a cheeky NO GAS sign, and Ayeesha Jilyara for her beautiful dot paintings, displaying the oceans wonder through her art.

Danielle will be the happy recipient of a DOUBLE SEASON PASS for this years’ festival, and our runners-up will receive a complimentary SEASON PASS each as well.

As a token of our love and gratitude, all of our entrants will also receive an Island Vibe Festival CD pack to add to their collection, just coz we’re really nice like that.

Kuranda Roots Festival 2014 is heading into it’s 11th year with a smile on it’s dial

06 APRIL 2014

Over the past ten years artists as diverse as the UK’s Mad Professor and Mungo’s HiFi, NZ’s Cornerstone Roots and Olmecha Supreme and Australian favourites Archie Roach, Opiuo, Combat Wombat, OKA, Dubmarine, Kingfisha and so many more, have made the journey up to the rainforest to perform in what some say is “the best little festival in Oz”.

To continue the tradition of bringing awesome musicians to town we have selected some tasty morsels for y’all to enjoy!

All the way from the UK – TIPPA IRIE - emerged from England's Saxon Sound International - the star-studded travelling sound system that has been at the forefront of the U.K. reggae dancehall scene for the past 25 years and helped launch the careers of artists such as Maxi Priest, Papa Levi and Smiley Culture.

Tippa Irie remains one of the most requested Reggae entertainers internationally and is part of the new generation of British MC's who developed the 'Fast Talking' style chat, which today can be heard in modern day rappers like Busta Rhymes. He has produced fifteen albums to date and has a string of number 1 hit songs to his credit including "Hey Mama" with the Black Eyed Peas (which was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Rap Song category).

Also heading to Kuranda this year are the Brisbane based dynamic nu-wave brass band BULLHORN - seven hard-hitting horn players, one boss drummer and one monster MC. Their sound is born from a high-octane mix of funk, soul, hip-hop, jazz, reggae and dance music. The combination of their high energy shows, virtuosic musicianship and profound musical arrangements never fails to inspire and get the audiences moving on the dancefloor.

Grab tickets now to avoid missing out - and we'll see you in beautiful Far North Queensland soon.

From raw beginnings as a young punk playing with The Gastric Chunks and Acid Moon, Morgyn Quinn (aka Rudi Quinzalez) started his career at underground festivals such as EarSex and monthy noise gigs at the local community centre.

In 1999 Rudi toured Japan as bass player with Gudju Gudju and stayed as a guest with the Ainu people of Hokkaido. In 2001 Rudi visited the Caribbean islands of Trinidad and Tobago, researching the origins of Rastafarian culture and satisfying a deep love of reggae music.

In 2003 Rudi settled in Brisbane and  founded Rudekat Records and going on to play in such acts as Hot rubber Glove, The Dynamic Thrills, Die Rude, The RudeKat Sound System and The Senors alongside such players as Paulie B (The Beautiful Girls, Bobby ALu), Lachlan Mitchell (Laneous & The Family Yah), D KazMan (Dubmarine, and Sunny Dread (The Zionites).

What started as an ethical clothing label specializing in original screenprints, the company soon expanded to include live events and music releases.

As well as being an avenue to release Australian reggae and independent music, Rudekat Records has been the creative force behind the Kuranda Roots Festival (2003 - 2013), West End Carnivale (2009 - 2010) and Island Vibe Festival (2006 - 2013). Rudekat also co-developed a DIY Event Management course for Youth at the Byron Bay YAC.

Rudekat Records has always been a strong supporter of environmental groups and causes, donating popular tee shirt designs to The Wilderness Society and The Australian Marine Conservation Society. Island Vibe has a strong environment record and has been twice awarded by the prestigious international A Greener Festivals Award. Wherever possible, Rudekat uses recycled materials for posters and CD manufacture, promotes recycling and DIY composting at festivals, and abstains from sweat-shop produced merchandise.

A trademark of Rudekat events is a cross fertilization of cultures, with a strong focus on Indigenous and Pacific artists and World Music. Rudekat has been proud to work with a stunning line up of star acts over the years including Archie Roach, The Easy Star AllStars (US), Prince Alla (Jamaica), JipaJiroa (Vanuatu), Opiuo, Spoonbill, Blue King Brown, Katchafire (NZ), Nicky Bomba, Chali 2na (US), The Black Seeds (NZ), House of Shem (NZ), Olmecha Supreme (NZ), Ladi 6 (NZ), Little Bushman (NZ), 1814 (NZ), The Beautiful Girls, Mista Savona, Grace Barbe, Oka, Dubmarine, Kooii, Kingfisha, Electric Wire Hustle (NZ), Zennith, Mantaka, The YuluBarribah Dancers, The Groote Eylandt Dancers amongst many others.

Rudekat events are also supportive of emerging artists, youth and showcasing various artforms, including circus, cabaret, spoken word, comedy, dance and visual arts.
